Christians and Wealth: Finding Balance in God's Promises
Christians have a complex relationship with wealth. Part of our theology reminds us that God owns everything and graciously wants to bless and reward his children with good things. Another part recognizes the value of stewardship, simplicity, and caring for the poor. Most of us bristle at television evangelists who ask for money to purchase airplanes and mansions in exchange for empty promises, but in a moment of honesty, we wouldn't mind a ride on a private jet if someone invited us.
Scripture seems to present conflicting messages. There are verses like Matthew 6:24: "You cannot serve both God and money," and the famous 1 Timothy 6:10: "For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil." However, Paul also says in 2 Corinthians 9:8, "And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." Plus, there's the classic from Proverbs 10:22: "The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it."
In Deuteronomy 8, God gives his people a covenant blessing: if they honor and obey him, the land they are entering will provide them with material wealth. What would you do with a promise like that from God? Would that inspire you to obedience if it meant you would truly experience material fulfillment? I would wonder what the catch is! What does that promise really mean?
This Sunday, June 1, we're going to explore that covenant promise to Israel in Deuteronomy 8. We'll also discuss our response to prosperity. What do we do if we are not prosperous, and what do we do if the Lord blesses us? This is a good week to be in church!
